Engineering Design Support for Test Systems

U.S. Army Aberdeen Test Center, Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD

Background

The Aberdeen Test Center (ATC) conducts testing and evaluation of developmental weapons systems. SciTech provides engineering design support to ATC. SciTech designs, modifies and prepares fabrication drawings for specialized tools, fixtures, equipment and components in support of a wide variety of test and evaluation programs. Our engineers develop function design criteria, programming documentation, preliminary and detailed engineering design specifications, drawings and summary reports for developmental engineering work involving mechanical and electrical engineering.

SciTech engineers develop structural designs and provide stress analysis support for explosives and blast technology testing equipment and facilities. Shop fabrication drawings and specifications are prepared. Design tasks have been conducted for gun mounts, sleighs, adaption hardware, portable blast shelters, turret mounting brackets, and target supports for testing activities at ATC.

SciTech Services include CAD support to prepare field run topographical and contour drawings, site plans, grade plans, sediment and erosion control plans, and creating solid models which are subsequently developed into functional component hardware. Completed design tasks include:

- Design for a gun tube storage rack

- Design for a pneumatic system for remotely operated munition drilling machine

- Up-grade through design, 3-tensile machines to performing bullet-pull functions

- Design for a pneumatic machine for disassembling and de-fuzing a variety of standard munitions fuze assemblies

- Up-grading and design modifications of an existing projectile cavitation machine
